Intellectual property
What is ours, what you may do with it without asking, and the one category we protect absolutely.
Plain English, and not written by a lawyer. This is an accurate description of how we operate, written so that a parent can read it. It is not legal advice and it has not been reviewed by a solicitor. If anything here matters to you legally, ask us and we will put it in writing.
1The short version
Use our words and our figures freely, with attribution. Ask before using our name or crest in a way that implies partnership. Never republish a photograph of a child from this site. That last one is not a preference.
2What we own
The Open Ice Initiative name, the crest, the wordmark, the written content of this website and the photographs taken at our camps belong to Open Ice Initiative Inc., or are used by us with permission.
The design and code of this website are ours. The typeface is Archivo, used under the SIL Open Font License.
3What you may do without asking
- Quote our text, with attribution to Open Ice Initiative and a link.
- Cite our figures. Say which figure and when you took it, because they change and the changelog records when.
- Link to any page here, including deep links.
- Reproduce our logo in a news article, a school newsletter or a sponsor report about us, at any size, unaltered.
- Use the press kit. It exists so that you do not have to ask.
4What you must ask about first
- Using our name or crest on a product, a service, an event or a fundraiser, because that reads as a partnership whether or not it is meant to.
- Altering the crest: recolouring it, cropping it, setting it on a busy background, or combining it with another mark.
- Reproducing a photograph in anything commercial.
- Using our material to train a machine learning model.

5Photographs of children: the absolute rule
Do not republish, redistribute, crop, screenshot or repost a photograph of an identifiable child from this website. Not on social media, not in a blog post, not in a deck, not as an illustration of something else.
Every one of those photographs is published under a consent given to us, by that family, for this website. That consent does not travel with the file, and it can be withdrawn at any time. Once a photograph is somewhere we do not control, we cannot honour a withdrawal, and the promise we made to a family becomes one we cannot keep.
Journalists: the press kit contains photographs cleared for editorial use, and we will supply more on request, same day. Use those.
To have a photograph of your child removed from this site, email andrew.adair@ucc.on.ca with roughly where it is. You do not have to say why. It is gone within twenty four hours.
6Other people's marks
Partner logos on this site belong to those organisations and appear with their permission, to acknowledge what they give us. Their presence does not transfer anything to us or to you.
News outlet names appear because those outlets reported on us. They are used to identify the source of a report, which is a use no permission is needed for, and they are not partners.
7If we have got something wrong
If something on this site is yours and should not be here, tell us and we will take it down while we work out what happened. We will not argue with you first.
